Road Closure: Fillmore St., 36th Ave. to Cottonwood Dr., Georgetown Twp., June 12-23

WHEN: June 12-23, 2023

WHERE: Fillmore St., 36th Ave. to Cottonwood Dr., Georgetown Township

WHY: High-Friction Surface Treatment

TRAFFIC IMPACT: The road will be closed to thru traffic. A detour will consist of 36th Ave./Bauer Rd.

BACKGROUND: The Ottawa County Road Commission plans to close Fillmore St. between 36th Ave. and Cottonwood Dr. beginning Monday, June 12, through Friday, June 23, for the installation of high-friction surface treatment (HFST) on several areas of pavement.

The areas that are a part of the treatment include:

• The hill/curves between 36th and 28th avenues
• The curve at the intersection of Fillmore Street/Cottonwood Drive.

All work dates are weather-dependent.

HFST involves the application of very high-quality aggregate to the pavement using a polymer binder to restore and/or maintain pavement friction at existing or potentially high crash areas.

The higher pavement friction helps motorists maintain better control in both dry and wet driving conditions.

The application process begins with the application of an epoxy to the road surface, followed by a layer of high-quality, small and coarse gravel.

Studies have shown that the installation of HFST can reduce crashes by as much as 69%.

The treatment was originally scheduled to be completed last fall after the repaving work on Fillmore Street, however delays in other parts of the project pushed the HFST application back to this year.
